Here's a list of panels I'm hosting at the 2002

in San Diego, August 1-4

Thursday, August 1

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM / Room 8
SPOTLIGHT ON BOB OKSNER

His work in comics included JERRY LEWIS, DOBIE GILLIS, SUPERGIRL, MARY MARVEL, SUPERMAN and many others, and many consider him one of the great "girl" artists in comic history.  Come meet BOB OKSNER in his first-ever West Coast convention appearance.

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM / Room 8
SPOTLIGHT ON HERB TRIMPE

Folks recall him for his Hulk but he drew most of the major Marvel titles at one time or another including Godzilla and G.I. Joe.  Come hear an interview with HERB TRIMPE...and see a documentary about Marvel in the sixties with a look at the Bullpen of the day.

Friday, August 2

11:30 AM - 1:00 PM / Room 8
50 YEARS OF MAD MAGAZINE

Several generations learned how to look at the world with the aid of America's most successful humor mag.  Hear how it all came to be from AL FELDSTEIN, FRANK JACOBS, SERGIO ARAGONÉS, AMANDA CONNER, PETER KUPER and others from the Usual Gang of Idiots.

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM / Room 8
THE ANNUAL GOLDEN AGE COMICS PANEL

Every year, we assemble veteran writers and artists to discuss the field in its wilder, formative days.  This time, we plan to welcome BOB LUBBERS, LEW SAYRE SCHWARTZ, BOB OKSNER, WILLIAM WOOLFOLK, NICK CARDY and IRV NOVICK.

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM / Room 8
SCOTT SHAW!'S ODDBALL COMICS SLIDE SHOW
(THE JULIUS SCHWARTZ EDITION)
SCOTT SHAW! loves to show slides of unusual comic books.  This special installment will be devoted wholly to comics edited by JULIUS "Living Legend" SCHWARTZ, who will tell us what little he remembers about these silly books.

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM / Room 6BCDEF
THE QUICK DRAW COMPETITION!

It's like Whose Line Is It Anyway? except they draw pictures.  At this year's Wondercon, it brought down the house.  Now, it'll be bringing down an even bigger gathering with contestants SERGIO Aragonés, SCOTT SHAW!, ERIK LARSEN, JOHN ROMITA, JR. and several surprises.

Saturday, August 3

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM / Room 6A
BEAT THE GEEKS

It's a fight to the death: The Purple Pros (LEN WEIN, MARK WAID and KURT BUSIEK) compete in a steel-cage trivia match against three comic book experts from the Comedy Central TV Show, BEAT THE GEEKS.  And may the geekiest comic book buff win.

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM / Room 6BDEF
RAY BRADBURY & JULIUS SCHWARTZ

One of the all-time great science-fiction authors and one of the all-time great science-fiction editors (and before that, agents) chat about their careers.  And there could even be a surprise guest or two.  (Yes, I know this overlaps with my next panel.  I'll just have to be in two places at once...)

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM / Room 8
CARTOON VOICE ACTORS

As we do every year, we'll chat with a bunch of folks who make their livings speaking for your favorite cartoon characters.  So far, we have GARY OWENS (Space Ghost), BOB BERGEN (Porky Pig), GREG BURSON (Bugs Bunny). MAURICE LaMARCHE (Futurama) and more.

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM / Room 8
20 YEARS OF GROO

Has it really been twenty years?  Seems like longer.  Well, however long it's been, come and celebrate with the entire Groo Crew — SERGIO ARAGONÉS, TOM LUTH, STAN SAKAI and M.E. — as we discuss the past, present and future of the idiot barbarian.

Sunday, August 4

11:30 AM - 1:00 PM / Room 8
A TRIBUTE TO DAN DeCARLO

He was the greatest of the Archie illustrators and so much more.  His wife, JOSIE DeCARLO, joins PAUL DINI, BILL MORRISON, GEORGE GLADIR, DAN FOGEL, CHUCK AUSTIN and others to remember the man and his prolific career as the "goodest" of the "good girl" artists.

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM / Room 8
THE ANNUAL JACK KIRBY TRIBUTE PANEL

Every year, we gather to talk about the man some call "The King of the Comics."  This year, that topic is batted around by TODD McFARLANE, DICK AYERS, HERB TRIMPE, JOHN ROMITA, MIKE ROYER and Jack's grandson, JEREMY KIRBY.  We'll also pay tribute to the late, great John Buscema.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Changes of time, place and program are always possible.  Consult your convention schedule and keep an eye out for last-minute announcements posted around the convention hall.
