Here's a list of events I'm hosting at the 2007

in San Diego, July 26-29

Thursday, July 26

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM / Room 8
SPOTLIGHT ON GARY FRIEDRICH

He was one of Marvel's top writers, handling everything from Sgt. Fury to Hulk, but he's probably best remembered for co-creating the motorcycle-riding Ghost Rider.  Making his first-ever West Coast comic book convention appearance, come meet "Groovy" GARY FRIEDRICH.

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM / Room 8
THE SERGIO AND MARK SHOW

There is much happening in the world of that silliest of all barbarians, Groo the Wanderer as he celebrates his 25th anniversary.  At this panel, you'll hear all about it, straight from the mouths of SERGIO ARAGONES, MARK EVANIER, STAN SAKAI, TOM LUTH and even an editor or two.

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM / Room 8
THE ANNUAL GOLDEN/SILVER AGE PANEL

Time for the yearly gathering of six veteran comic creators discussing the industry, past and present.  Come hear GEORGE GLADIR, ALLEN BELLMAN, MEL KEEFER, DICK AYERS, LILY RENEE PHILLIPS and RUSS HEATH talk about how it used to be and can never be again.

Friday, July 27

NOON - 1:00 PM / Room 8
SPOTLIGHT ON ALLEN BELLMAN

He drew Captain America, Sub-Mariner and Human Torch (among others) for Timely in the forties and went on to work for Bob Wood and Lev Gleason Publications, before leaving comics for the newspaper world. Meet one of the unsung heroes of the Golden Age of Comics, ALLEN BELLMAN.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM / Room 8
SPOTLIGHT ON MEL KEEFER

He was responsible for newspaper strips such as Perry Mason, Mac Divot, and Rick O’Shay, worked extensively in animation and was even Jack Lemmon's "stunt cartoonist" in the 1965 movie, How to Murder Your Wife.  In his first-ever Comic-Con appearance, come meet MEL KEEFER.

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM / Room 8
MARVEL IN THE SIXTIES & SEVENTIES

What was it like creating The Marvel Age of Comics, back when we all faced front and hung loose?  Here's a discussion of those halcyon days with folks who were there including ROY THOMAS, GARY FRIEDRICH, DICK AYERS, MIKE PLOOG, DAVID GEORGE and maybe others.

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM / Room 8
SPOTLIGHT ON MARK EVANIER

Writer PAUL DINI turns the tables on the convention's grand inquisitor, interviewing M.E. about his career in comics, animation and live-action TV.  If you're a fan of show business anecdotes, you've come to the right place.  And if you just need a place to rest your feet, that'll do as well.

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM / Room 8
SPOTLIGHT ON DAVE STEVENS

The Rocketeer zoomed out of the sky 25 years ago and took the comics world by storm!  (And if you didn't like him, there was always Bettie!)  Let's catch up with one of the world's great renderers of adventure and beautiful women, DAVE STEVENS in a rare Comic-Con conversation.

Saturday, July 28

10:30 AM - NOON / Room 6CDEF
QUICK DRAW!

It's a duel to the death with Sharpie markers at ten paces.  Three lightning-quick cartoonists duke it out, drawing instant cartoons based on suggestions from the host and the audience.  Come challenge SERGIO ARAGONES, SCOTT SHAW! and MIKE KAZALEH.

NOON - 1:15 PM / Room 6B
CARTOON VOICE ACTORS I

A demonstration of the fine art of speaking for animated characters...with NEIL ROSS (G.I. Joe), WALLY WINGERT (Invader Zim), KATHY GARVER (Spider-Man), WILL RYAN (Disney), CHRIS EDGERLY (Harvey Birdman) and JOE ALASKEY (Duck Dodgers).

I don't have a panel between 1:15 and 4:00 this day.
You don't want to go downstairs and brave that exhibit hall at
that hour...so may I suggest you spend some of that time at
SCOTT SHAW!'s ODDBALL COMICS SLIDE SHOW?
It runs from 2:30 to 4:00 in Room 5AB.

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM / Room 2
SPOTLIGHT ON ROY THOMAS

He went from editing the seminal comics fanzine Alter Ego to a job at Marvel Comics, writing/editing The Avengers, X-Men, Conan and just about every other Marvel character and group, including, at one point, editing the whole line.  We talk with ROY THOMAS about his long and storied career.

Sunday, July 29

10:30 AM - 11:45 AM / Room 1AB
THE ANNUAL JACK KIRBY TRIBUTE PANEL
Once again, we stop to talk of the man they call "The King of the Comics."  This time, talking Kirby will be NEIL GAIMAN, DARWYN COOKE, ERIK LARSEN, MIKE ROYER and members of the Kirby family, with previews of upcoming Kirby projects and a few surprises.

NOON - 1:15 PM / Room 6B
CARTOON VOICE ACTORS II
Another demonstration of the fine art of speaking for animated characters...with TOM KENNY (SpongeBob SquarePants), MICHAEL BELL (Rugrats), APRIL STEWART (South Park), GREGG BERGER (Transformers), MAURICE LaMARCHE (Pinky and the Brain) and CHARLES NAPIER (Men in Black).

1:30 PM - 3:00 PM / Room 1AB
COVER STORY: THE ART OF THE COVER

You really can tell a book by its cover.  A conversation with ADAM HUGHES (Catwoman), JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER (Dawn), JOE JUSKO (Tomb Raider), ROWENA (renowned fantasy cover illustrator), MATT WAGNER (Grendel, Batman), J. H. WILLIAMS (Promethea) and others.

Changes of time, place and program are rare but possible.  Check my weblog, consult your convention schedule and keep an eye out for last-minute announcements posted around the hall.
