CROSSFIRE was a spin-off from DNAgents, created by Will Meugniot and myself. The comic,
written by M.E. and brilliantly illustrated by Dan Spiegle, was probably my favorite of all the comics I've written over the years. They're
usually available in the cheapo bins at comic shops and conventions, or for minimum bid on eBay and I tell folks who want to read something I've
written to try those. If you don't like Crossfire, you won't like anything else I've done.
The star of the comic was Jay Endicott, a bailbondsman who — as seen in DNAgents — came to possess the costume and burglary
equipment of Crossfire, a noted, high-tech industrial spy. The old guy was a cold-hearted, law-breaking mercenary; Jay is a large-hearted,
law-enforcing crusader who finds the dual identity handy in righting matters that go unsolved by the police or unpunished by the courts.
As darn near everyone figured out, there was a certain level of autobiography to the comic, as I'm a big believer that neither of those
institutions (the police, the courts) do what they do in an efficient, justice-for-all manner...and this was before O.J. Mr. Endicott had a few
traits in common with me, such as driving a powder-blue '57 Thunderbird. However, I did learn the major pitfall of doing a
semi-autobiographical work of fiction. It's that people assume that everything in the work corresponds to something that happened to the
author...which ain't true.
We did a couple of spin-offs from Crossfire. One was the Crossfire and Rainbow mini-series. The other was
Whodunnit?, a 3-issue mystery/contest book wherein a crime was left unsolved and one could win a thousand bucks for figuring out the
solution.
Dan and I are constantly asked if and when Crossfire will be back. The honest answer is: "As soon as some publisher makes
an even remotely respectable offer." It was Dan's favorite project, too.
