Conventional Problems "Tell us," someone wrote, "what makes some panels at comic conventions so good and some so bad?" Okay, you're right: No one wrote to ask that. But that didn't stop me from writing this article about... "Are The New Comics In?" No, this one is not about drug use in Hollywood. It's about the place in West Los Angeles where I bought my comic books when I was a kid. And before you read it, you might want to click here to see a vintage photo of the place. Fan of Two Worlds Julie Schwartz co-published the first science-fiction fanzine...he became a top s-f agent, representing many great authors (some kid named Ray Bradbury, among them)...then he became one of the best editors the comic book industry has ever seen. Citizen Kane When Bob Kane passed away, the wire services moved this photo of (note the use of quotes:) "the creator of Batman." It was his main p.r. handout pic and it was rather old. Matter of fact, it was taken a day or two before I met him in 1968 — an experience detailed in these columns. That's a genuine, unghosted Bob Kane drawing of Batman, which he did for the photo session and which he gave me the day of our first meeting. I still have it...somewhere. Fauntleroy & Crawford If I had to pick my favorite comic book, I'd probably settle on The Fox and the Crow, which was published by DC for an amazingly long time when you consider that (a) the cartoons on which it was based weren't particularly successful and (b) this required generating hundreds of stories about one fox and one crow, with no supporting characters.
