Conventional Problems

"Tell us," someone wrote, "what makes some panels at comic conventions so good and some so bad?"  Okay, you're right: No one wrote to ask that.  But that didn't stop me from writing this article about...

"Are The New Comics In?"

No, this one is not about drug use in Hollywood.  It's about the place in West Los Angeles where I bought my comic books when I was a kid.  And before you read it, you might want to click here to see a vintage photo of the place.

Fan of Two Worlds

Julie Schwartz co-published the first science-fiction fanzine...he became a top s-f agent, representing many great authors (some kid named Ray Bradbury, among them)...then he became one of the best editors the comic book industry has ever seen.  Here are a batch of columns about the man they call The Living Legend...

Citizen Kane

When Bob Kane passed away, the wire services moved this photo of (note the use of quotes:) "the creator of Batman."  It was his main p.r. handout pic and it was rather old.  Matter of fact, it was taken a day or two before I met him in 1968 — an experience detailed in these columns.  That's a genuine, unghosted Bob Kane drawing of Batman, which he did for the photo session and which he gave me the day of our first meeting.  I still have it...somewhere.

"E" Ticket Escapades

They say it's the happiest place on Earth.  But then, the same people also said that Tron was a great movie and that Mike Ovitz could get along with Michael Eisner.  Here are some adventures from The Magic Kingdom...

The Wheels of Justice

How I spent one entire morning and part of the afternoon  contemplating the judicial system when I had...

Tales of the Comic Book Business

...and a very odd business it is and, especially, was.  But it's a business that has attracted some amazing, brilliantly-talented artists and writers.  This section is devoted to articles about some of them, and some of what's been done to them...

Comic Collecting Columns

Here's where we put stories about the world of comic collecting, conventions, fanzines, comic clubs and other warped institutions via which we of aberrant interest communicate.  It's an amazing world...often more exciting than anything that appears in the comics.  And a lot more real.

"The Duck Man"

The last thing he expected when he began drawing Donald Duck funnybooks was that he would become famous...but that's exactly what happened to Carl Barks.  Several generations cried when he passed away, six months shy of age 100.  We don't think it was a cause for tears at all, as explained in an article you can read by clicking on the revered name of...

Able to Leap Deep Plot Holes...

I really liked the Superman TV series but by its last season, it had gotten very silly.  I got a few folks riled with these columns about the lack o' logic in one of the final season episodes.  They thought I was defacing a childhood treasure.  Others, however, wrote to say, "You're right," or to point out similar snags in other installments.  Anyway, here they are...

In Search Of...

Ah, the thrill of the hunt!  The lust of the chase!  When you're a kid, there's nothing more frustrating and fruitless than trying to complete your set of...

Fauntleroy & Crawford

If I had to pick my favorite comic book, I'd probably settle on The Fox and the Crow, which was published by DC for an amazingly long time when you consider that (a) the cartoons on which it was based weren't particularly successful and (b) this required generating hundreds of stories about one fox and one crow, with no supporting characters.  In a three-part column last year, I disseminated everything I knew about the comics and the cartoons from whence they came...

Uncle Miltie

Here's the story of the first time the operator of this website met Milton Berle.  It was the day he had...

Formerly On This Site

Most of the columns on this page were previously posted on this site but which I removed because they're included in my books, Comic Books and Other Necessities of Life. Wertham Was Right! and Superheroes In My Pants.  These, for instance...

Never On This Site

These are columns that have never been posted on this site but which will be, one of these days.  Maybe.  I still haven't finished proofing them so if you see any typos, please let me know.

Coming to This Site

These are sections that are still in work and will soon be added to this site.  (There's a lot of gibberish in them because I haven't pasted in the real text.)

Of No Interest Whatsoever

Ignore these listings.  They're stuff I have to have somewhere on the site for technical reasons.
